An Open Floor for Everyone

November 21st, 2013

Acts 13:38-39, “We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is declared right with God…”

“Come on in! It’s an open floor,” he declared as he stood at the front door of the coffee shop. He was an artist at the Endless Summer tattoo shop art show, and proclaimed loud and clear that all were welcome to join. Curious and intrigued, I wandered in from the street as the daylight faded into early evening.
I walked around and admired the different styles of the artists’ work and let the words I had just heard sink in. I felt welcome and not judged, free to explore and ponder. I liked the words he chose to use.
What if the church was known for being an open floor? Wasn’t this the very heart of Jesus Christ?
John 3:16-17 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
Sadly, I knew many people who were intimidated to enter a church because they were afraid of being treated as an outsider or didn’t want to be judged. Perhaps people in the church are to blame for perpetuating this feeling whether intentional or not.
I hoped that as a Christian I carried an open floor attitude with all the people I came in contact with. The spirit of the Lord is inclusive, just like this tattoo artist.
